I am going to go over the acne products/chemicals that I think are most helpful in solving your acne problem. If you are not familiar with a name, that is probably because it is not a brand name acne fighter, but the active ingredient in multiple different products. I am going to leave it up to you to decide which actual product to try.

1. Benzoyl Peroxide – If your initial reaction was, “what is this, I have never heard of it, how is it number one?”, don’t worry, it is not some obscure chemical, it is a common solution for acne. Benzoyl peroxide is a peeling agent which means it works by cleaning out pores while acting as a antibacterial. In my opinion this is generally the best acne treatment. It is also popular and proven. If you don’t believe me, just think about a Proactiv commercial you have seen. Benzoyl peroxide is the active ingredient in all of proactiv’s products. Also, acne.org’s central plan centers around benzoyl peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide usually comes in creams in a 2.5% dosage. 5% and 10% creams also exist, but 2.5% is what you want. It can and usually does cause some kind of dryness and irritation at first, but trust me, stick with it. The bottom line is benzoyl peroxide will definitely help if not completely fix mild to moderate acne. The main thing, which I have said over and over, is that you have to stick with it. If trying out benzoyl peroxide, use it once a day, usually in morning, for a couple of weeks at least.

2. Salicylic Acid- I am not going to talk to much about salicylic acid, and that is because it works very similarly to benzoyl peroxide, but is less potent, meaning if benzoyl peroxide bothers you that much, then you could use salicylic acid instead. Like benzoyl peroxde, salicylic acid will not be the name of a product at your pharmacy or grocery store. All products have some kind of name including acne, cleanser etc. Salicylic will be on the back under active ingredient. I have found that most acne creams in local stores will have salicylic acid as the active ingredient.

I know that this is a short list of acne products, but about 90% of over the counter acne products contain these ingredients, and that is because they work. I am going to continue the list with some different at-home techniques and some different ideas.

3. Toothpaste- I am definitely not saying that toothpaste is your cure for acne, but for people who just have a pimple or two, and want an overnight fix, it is great. The way putting toothpaste works is by drying out acne. Be warned that sometimes this can irritate your skin and cause redness. Bottom line, if you don’t have any acne medication and want to get rid of a pimple, put some toothpaste on it when you are going to bed.

4. Exfoliation/Baking Soda- Exfoliation is the act of removing dead skin cells. This is usually accomplished by some kind of textured cream. The reason this helps acne is that dead skin cells can clog pores and also exfoliating will help in the recovering of your skin. The reason i put baking soda up exfoliation is because baking soda is the cheapest easiest exfoliator. For baking soda just mix baking soda with water until it is paste, then gently massage. There are tons of exfoliating products out there, so just find one and add it to your daily routine.
