Acne Scar Removal: What Are Your Options?

You aren’t alone if you endure unyielding acne breakouts – inflamed lesions, marks, pigmentation changes and scars that seem unending. If this is you, start researching now how to get rid of acne scars and the many available acne scar repair options out there.
Macules aren’t real scars. They are flat and reddish colored marks that are the end stage of inflamed acne lesions. Macules might last up to 6 months after the lesion has disappeared, but eventually leave no trace, unlike scars. Post-Inflammatory Pigmentation is another mark (discoloration of skin) that healing acne lesions might leave behind. This type of pigmentation is far more common in darker-skinned people. These changes may last for up to 18 months, especially if paired with too much sun exposure. Ice Pick Scars are a typical acne scar appearing on the cheeks and look sharp and narrow, as if punctured by an ice pick. These types of scars are deep, reaching the subcutaneous layer for this reason they are difficult to erase with just skin resurfacing treatments. Box Car Scars are circular indentations with borders that are both sharp and vertical. Found on both the temples and cheeks, box car scars range in depth. Rolling Scars are typically associated with acne and cause the skin to look wave-like due to its tethering of skin to the subcutaneous tissue below. Although varying in length, these scars tend to be the longest of those related to acne. Hypertrophic Scars are raised scars that reveal themselves with a pinkish or reddish tone.
10 Acne Scar Treatments
The beauty and cosmetics industry has made successful advances in acne scar treatment. Read about the available acne scar removal products and treatments so you can choose the one that is best for you:
1. Acne Treatment as Prevention
Get rid of your acne! Treating from the get-go reduces the severity of acne and its resultant scars. If you don’t have inflamed lesions, you won’t need acne scar removal.
2. Acne Scar Removal Cream
Tretinoin and alpha-hydroxy acids are common scar cream ingredients that treat acne and reduce stains and scarring.
3. Natural Acne Scar Removal
As anti-inflammatories, onion extract and mucin reduce coloring and protrusion of scars. The onion slows down the production of
1000
collagen, therefore reducing the extent that hypertrophic scars are seen. Mucin, on the contrary, stimulates collagen and elastin production as well as that of healthy new skin cells.
4. Chemical Peels
These aren’t the most successful treatment for scars but work well with changes in pigmentation due to acne.
5. Injections
Injections can elevate depressed areas or soothe inflamed scars. This treatment works well on rolling scars for they have smoother edges than other acne scars. Apply tension to the scar shoulder. If your scar improves, then fillers might be your solution. Steroid injections help flatten hypertrophic and keloid scars.
6. Non-Ablative Collagenosis
With the use of radiofrequency and laser devices, collagen formation is encouraged in the subcutaneous layers, without damaging the outer layer that is visible.
7. Microdermabrasion
This treatment involves a series of sessions where a very thin layer of skin is abraded away with crystals, often aluminum, carrying away fine scars and stains.
8. Photorejuvenation
Photorejuvenation uses laser or broadband visible light to stimulate new collagen protein formation.
9. Scar Revision
Scar revision removes larger, circular acne scars by replacing them with a linear one. This procedure is popular for skin areas that are highly discernible. This works well for ice pick and boxcar scars. Subcision is used to cut scar tissue that is tethered to the tissue, i.e. rolling scars. For further results, filler substances can be injected into the area cut.
10. Resurfacing: Ablative Laser Treatments and Dermabrasion
Resurfacing lasers quickly strip away the outer layer of skin in order to remove scarred skin and encourage new skin production. Collagen in the subcutaneous layers is stimulated. Dermabrasion removes surface layer problems with abrasive wire or brush. This last procedure is often considered the best acne scar removal treatment for those with scars.
